Jeep Wrangler YJ Budget Suspension Lift

Lifting your Jeep Wrangler can be an expensive project that's also time consuming, especially if you've never installed a lift before. Often times, customers will ask if there's a cheaper or faster way to get 33-inch tires on their Wrangler YJ without parting with the cash for a complete suspension lift. The answer to that is yes, and while it may not be a setup that will perform as well off-road as a full suspension lift, it will certainly make your Jeep Wrangler more trail-worthy than the factory Wrangler setup.

A traditional suspension lift kit for the 1987-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ primarily consists of four leaf springs and installation hardware. The amount of arch in the leaf springs determines how much lift will be attained once they're installed on the Jeep. Separating the old springs from the axle, then removing them from the vehicle, and then reversing this process to install the new springs can take some effort and is difficult to accomplish alone. Installing a suspension lift kit is not an exact science, but there will certainly be times when you'll have to get "creative" during the installation process in order to get some pieces to fit and align properly before they can be bolted down. This is where some people cringe and justify that it's better to spend less money to install a simpler lift that takes less time.

Fortunately, a 3-inch lift on the Wrangler YJ can be attained with a 2-inch body lift combined with a 1-inch shackle lift.

What is a body lift? A body lift is a set of spacers that are placed at the mounting points where the Jeep tub (or body) is bolted to the frame (or chassis). The idea is to use these spacer to raise the body away from the frame, hence the term "body lift".

What are shackles and what is a shackle lift? The shackles are devices that attach the leaf springs the the frame. They pivot when the spring gets extended or compressed. A shackle lift is a set of replacement shackles that are longer than the factory shackles. By replacing the factory shackles with longer shackles, the frame is moved away from the axle which results in lift, hence the term "shackle lift". A 2-inch shackle will net approximately 1-inch of lift.

The typical 3-inch Jeep Wrangler YJ suspension lift with shocks can cost anywhere from 0 to 0 (depending on the manufacturer) and take anywhere from five to 10 hours to install (depending on installer experience). A 2-inch body lift for the Wrangler YJ can cost between 0 and 0 and takes approximately two hours to install. A 1-inch shackle lift for the Wrangler YJ can cost between and 0 and takes approximately one to two hours to install.

By combining a 2-inch body lift and a 1-inch shackle lift, you can attain a 3-inch lift on your 1987-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ for a budget cost of about 1/4 to 1/3 the price of a suspension lift and have it installed in less time and still fit the same size tires. In fact, the money you save can be applied toward a new set of wheels and tires.

Jeep Snow Plow

We all know that jeeps are one of the best off road cars in the world, but snow is a whole other territory even for a jeep. However you can attach several equipments on the jeep such as ice pokes on the wheels as well as snow plowing equipment at the front of the car. The best way to find this kind of equipment for making your jeep into a snow plowing machine is by searching the internet, where you will find the right stores to go to as well as the right equipment to buy so you don't go buying the wrong size or the wrong material.

There are currently a variety of snow plow machines and vehicles in the market today and a couple of them would include ATV, tractor snow plows, and truck snow plows. Jeep snow plows are not that different from these others. However with a jeep snow plow you are probably using your own jeep and will have to buy your own materials that you will attach to the jeep for plowing purposes.

The materials involved will have to be strong and sturdy as well as light enough to be held by your jeep. The blade has to have corrosion resistant paint so as to last you a while and also be able to withstand brute force because you might encounter some hard surfaces as you are plowing the snow. The best quality of blades would be from Meyer's snow plow blades and Boss snow plow blades.

Jeep snow plows are mostly used by home owners or buy people who are trying to make a living during a snow season by plowing the streets for others as well as driveways. Its best to get the right materials for your jeep and if you are not sure look for an expert and get an opinion on how to go about it.

Help My Jeep Won't Start - Jeep Cherokee Trouble Shooting

Failure to start falls into two categories:

1) The engine will not turn over - the starter motor will not run

Or

2) The engine turns over but will not fire and run.

This article will address the first cause. If you engine turns over but will not fire see my other article.

Start by checking the battery voltage. Most Jeeps have a voltage meter on the dash. If the voltage is low - below 10 volts, check the following:

1. Fist check to see if there is a cause for the battery to be discharged. Were the lights left on? Doors left open or other power draining accessory left on? If so, turn off the drain and use jumper cables to start using a charged battery from a different vehicle.
2. If there has been no excess power drain, check the condition of the battery cables. Remove the cables from the battery posts and clean the contacts. Also check the connection of the ground cable to the vehicle body.
3. If the battery cables are clean and making good contact and the voltage is still low, verify that the alternator is functioning properly.
4. If the battery continues to fail to start your Jeep, replace the battery.

If the battery voltage is normal but the engine still will not turn over, the most common cause is one of the safety interlocks. On an automatic transmission there is a Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) that only allows the engine to start in neutral or park. The contacts in the NSS can corrode and cause the switch to malfunction. Move the shifter back and forth while turning the key to start. Often the motion will cross a spot on the switch that still works. The NSS can be disassembled and cleaned or simply replaced with a new unit.

If the NSS is working properly but the starter still will not turn, you may have a defective starter or starter solenoid. The starter and solenoid are replaced as a unit on the XJ Cherokees. However before buying as replacement starter, check the wiring connection on the starter and the trigger wire to the solenoid. Often these connections can become loose or dirty due to the rigors of off road driving. Some people have reported that starters can be disassembled and cleaned to correct problems but I have not tried this procedure.

The "Perfect" Jeep - The Jeep CJ7's Storied History

It was 1976 when the first Jeep CJ7 graced the roads. Redesigned from the frame up, the new CJ was much more practical for "civilian" use than any of its predecessors. The now fully boxed frame not only provided superior strength, but was also widened to increase stability. The leaf springs were altered and moved further outward, and anti-sway bars and a steering stabilizer were added for even more improvements in drivability. Although the CJ5 received these improvements as well, the CJ7 boasted an additional 10 inches in its wheelbase. This not only provided an even more stable ride but also added rear leg room and interior cargo space. The Jeep CJ7 was improved further in 1982 with upgrades to the axles, providing better cornering abilitys and overall handling, thanks to the wider stance.

The 1976 CJ7 came standard with a 232ci inline 6 cylinder engine, though Jeep offered upgrades in the form of a 304ci 5.0 liter and a 258ci 4.2L inline 6 cylinder. Jeep also offered the choice of a standard heavy duty Borg Warner T-150 3 speed transmission or an optional Borg Warner T18 4 speed transmission with a "granny" first gear as an upgrade. The Dana Model 20 was the only transfer case available upon its release.

By 1980, things began to change for the Jeep CJ7. The GM 151ci 4 cylinder engine became the stock powerplant, and the optional 5.0L V8 engine was discontinued later in 1981. In 1984 the AMC 150ci 4 cylinder replaced the GM 151.

Along the way, the transmission saw come changes as well. The Tremec T-176 and SR4 were both introduced in 1980, whose 4 speeds were built more for street use, rather than off-roading. Automatic transmissions, the TF999 and TF904, also debuted in 1980, for the more casual Jeep consumer. In '81, the 4 speed Borg Warner T4 and 5 speed T5 transmissions both saw their first use.

1980 was the year that the Dana Model 20 transfer case was replaced by the Dana Model 300. The Model 300 had a much deeper low range, 2.62:1 compared to the 2.03:1 Dana 20. The change was necessary due to Jeep no longer offering anything like the granny gear found in the T18 transmission.

As for the CJ7's standard axles, Jeep offered the Dana Model 30 for the front and the AMC 20 for the rear. The Dana 44 rear axle was being offered as an upgrade on select models, and later became standard in 1986. Jeep offered no optional factory front axles.

In 1987, CJ7 was gone, the AMC badges were lost and the Wrangler was born. Many Jeep purists believe this was the end of the real Jeep. Although the engines and geometry remained the same, the transfer case, rear axle, and transmission all went even "lighter" duty. The interior took a shift for a more car-like appearance, and safety changes were made. For instance, the roll bar morphed to a full roll cage, which kept the windshield from folding down.

Since 1987, no vehicle produced can compare with the Wrangler. However, the Jeep CJ7 remains a vehicle in its own class. Today, it remains one of the most sought after Jeeps for off-roading, restoration, or just a weekend trip. It's simple design and popularity has kept the aftermarket flooded with parts and accessories. Additionally, a Jeep CJ7 can be literally built from nothing as frames are offerred at many jeep parts sites. For these and countless other reasons, the CJ7 may just be the "perfect" Jeep.

Jeep Select Trac NP 242 Transfer Case Information

The Select Trac option on the Jeep Cherokee gets you the New Process NP 242 transfer case. This transfer case gives the following operating modes: 2wd, 4wd with the center differential open, 4wd with the center differential locked, neutral, and 4wd low range (center differential locked)

The addition of a center differential is the main difference between the NP 242 and the NP 231 or Command Trac transfer case. Without a differential, the 231 transfer case offers only part time four wheel drive mode.

The NP 242 transfer case Full time mode opens the center differential allowing the front and rear axles to rotate at different speeds while still being linked by the transfer case. The end with the least traction will get the most torque. While this mode may have some disadvantages off road where a wheel may loose contact with the ground, it has the advantage of being usable on all paved surfaces. Part Time mode - with the center differential locks can only be used on loose or slick surfaces with out possible damage to the transfer case.

I use full time mode on wet streets, hard packed gravel or dirt, some snow and ice situations and on dry pavement when full acceleration without wheel spin is desirable. I use part time mode on loose gravel, dirt, grass and any off road situation. I use Part time mode when RallyCross racing as well.

I use low range for more control in off road situations or on rough gravel roads when traveling downhill to avoid excessive use of the brakes. I also often use low range when positioning my trailer or other towed equipment when precision placement is needed.

The NP 242 transfer case can be switched between 2wd and either 4wd mode at any speed simply by moving the lever. The switch to low range must be made at very low speed - the Jeep manual says 3 mph.

One common operating problem with the 242 transfer case is that it will stick in 4wd even if the lever is moved to 2wd. Internally, moving the lever loads a spring which then applies force to move the selector fork. If the gears are loaded with torque, the spring will not have enough energy to move the sleeve off the gears. Once torque is removed from the gears, the spring will then move the fork and slide the sleeve of the gears.

Momentarily lifting your foot off the gas will often unload the gears enough to allow the spring pressure to move the fork. On some high mileage units, a wear groove will form on the sleeve or gear causing it to stick longer and may require a couple of changes from loaded to unloaded to get the sleeve to release form the gear.

The Jeep NP 242 is lubricated with Automatic Transmission fluid. The level is checked by removing the upper of the two large plugs on the back of the case. The fluid should be level with the upper plug.

The NP 242 has a slip yoke on the tail shaft. If the drive shaft is damaged or removed, fluid will be lost out the tail shaft. Also this seal is important to maintain in good condition to prevent fluid loss.

The NP 242 is a very versatile transfer case and is my choice for three of my five Jeeps. The full time selection gets frequent use in all of them.

When the Jeep Cherokee water pump seal fails, it will leak from the weep hole in the bottom of the pump. Since this hole is behind the pulley, it is often hard to see where the fluid is coming from. Often a water pump leak will be misdiagnosed as a leaking hose as the fluid runs down and drips off the bottom of the hose.

Jeep

How to Replace the Water Pump on a Jeep Cherokee

Begin by letting the Jeep cool. Remove the radiator cap and make sure there is no pressure in the system.

How to Replace the Water Pump on a Jeep Cherokee

No URL

Remove the electric fan. It unbolts from the header at the top and the bottom sits in two tabs at the bottom of the radiator.

Place a pan under the Jeep to catch the anti freeze and remove the lower radiator hose. Let the system drain. Next, remove the heater hose from the tube attached to the water pump. Be careful with the tube as you will have to reuse it.

Break loose the four bolts that hold the pulley to the water pump but do not remove them. If the tension on the belt does not hold the pulley from turning, use a square section screwdriver between two bolts to hold it while breaking loose each bolt.

Remove the tension of the belt at the power steering pump. On the earlier versions, the whole power steering pump moves. On later ones, there is a separate adjuster pulley. Move the belt out of the way.

Finish removing the bolts and remove the pulley. Now you can access the four pump mounting bolts. These have half inch heads, not 13mm and one bolt is longer than the others.

Remove the two bolts that hold the power steering pump bracket. These are 15mm on some and 9/16 on others.

Now pry the pump away from the block. If this is an original water pump, there will be a pry tab on the top of the pump by the metal pipe. Many aftermarket pumps do not have this pry tab.

Twist the pump out from under the power steering pump bracket and carefully remove it from the Jeep. Place the pump in a vise and remove the metal pipe noting its orientation.

Put some thread sealer on the threads and install the pipe in the new water pump. Turn it until it is aligned the same as the old one was. It should stick straight back from the impeller.

Use some sticky gasket sealer like permatex to hold the gasket on the water pump. Clean the front surface of the block down to bare metal. This is probably the most time consuming part of the whole job. Use a scraper and some chemical gasket remover if needed. The block is cast iron, so you can be aggressive when scraping.

Twist the new pump into place under the power steering pump bracket and seat it into place. Install the four mounting bolts that secure it to the block. Tighten them evenly.

Install the two bolts that hold the pump to the power steering bracket. Install the pulley using a screwdriver to hold the bolts while you tighten them. Make sure the pulley seats squarely on the flange and does not wobble when you spin it round.

Install the belt and set it to the proper tension. Reinstall the lower radiator hose and tighten the clamp. Leave the upper hose off for the moment.

Fill the system with a mixture of antifreeze and water appropriate for your climate. I use 50/50. Fill until the fluid comes out the heater hose or the metal line. Reinstall the hose and continue to fill the system. Most Jeeps hold about two gallons when the water pump is removed.

Check for leaks and then install the electric fan. Tilt it into place and engage the lower tabs. Then install the two bots at the top. Connect the control wire.

Start the engine and check the belt tension and check for leaks. Recheck the coolant level after the engine has been heat cycled.
